VDA 6.3 is a process audit standard developed by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) for the systematic assessment of processes in the automotive industry. The current edition is VDA 6.3:2023, the fourth revised edition published in January 2023. The standard provides a structured approach for evaluating process performance, identifying process risks and improvement opportunities, and assessing processes across product and production process development, production process implementation and series production.
VDA 6.3 is used to systematically assess processes and identify potential risks and weaknesses within the automotive value chain. The standard supports companies in evaluating process performance, identifying improvement opportunities and establishing a consistent basis for process audits. The VDA 6.3 potential analysis, P1, can also be used to assess the potential risks associated with suppliers, new technologies, new locations or new products.
A VDA 6.3 process audit is a structured assessment of relevant processes based on the requirements and evaluation criteria defined in VDA 6.3. The audit examines processes across the relevant stages of the product and production process lifecycle. Depending on the scope, the assessment can cover areas ranging from product and process development through production process implementation to series production. The objective is to identify process risks, evaluate process performance and derive improvement opportunities.
The VDA 6.3 potential analysis P1 and a VDA 6.3 process audit serve different purposes. P1 is a defined extract from the VDA 6.3 questionnaire and is primarily used for potential and risk assessment. A process audit evaluates the relevant processes in greater depth against the applicable VDA 6.3 requirements and assessment criteria. The potential analysis can therefore be used as an early assessment tool, while a process audit provides a more comprehensive evaluation of process performance.
VDA 6.3:2023 covers the potential analysis P1 and the process elements P2 to P7. These include project management, product and process development, supplier management, process analysis and production, customer service and other relevant process stages through series production. The specific process elements and questions applied in an audit depend on the audit scope and the processes being assessed.
VDA 6.3 provides automotive suppliers with a structured framework for evaluating process capability, process performance and potential risks. This is particularly relevant in the automotive supply chain, where robust processes are essential for meeting customer, quality and delivery requirements. The potential analysis P1 can also support the assessment of suppliers and their ability to meet defined process requirements.
VDA 6.3:2023 is the fourth revised edition of the standard, published in January 2023. Compared with the 2016 edition, the standard has been updated and further specified in several areas. Changes include revisions to the questionnaire and assessment methodology, adjustments to the P1 potential analysis and updated requirements for process audits. The 2023 edition also places greater emphasis on software-related aspects, includes adjustments concerning procurement activities in process elements P3 and P4, and revises the definition and allocation of questions marked with particular significance. In addition, guidance relating to remote and hybrid audits has been incorporated, and the content has been aligned more closely with related VDA approaches, including Automotive SPICE and the Reifegradabsicherung für Neuteile (RGA) methodology.
